How the 964 and the 993 differ
The 993 replaced the 964 and is the last air-cooled 911. The 964 (1989–1994) looks like a classic 911 but was largely new underneath: coil springs, power steering, ABS and, in the Carrera 4, the first four-wheel drive in a regular 911. Its 3.6-litre flat-six produces 250 PS. The 993 (1993–1998) got a smoother body, a new multi-link rear axle and a six-speed manual gearbox, with 272 PS and, from 1995, 285 PS.
The most valuable 964s are the lightweight Carrera RS and the Turbo. On the 993 the Carrera RS and the GT2 are the most collectable, and its Turbo was the first 911 Turbo with twin turbochargers and all-wheel drive.
