About the Ferrari 348

The 348 replaced the 328 in 1989 and was first shown at the Frankfurt motor show that September. Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina designed it; the strakes over the side air intakes recall the Testarossa. The 3.4-litre V8 (300 PS) sits lengthways behind the cabin, with the gearbox mounted across the car: the "t" in 348 tb and ts stands for that transverse gearbox.

The tb is the closed berlinetta and the ts has a removable roof panel; Ferrari built 2,894 tb and 4,228 ts cars. In 1993 the open 348 Spider arrived, with a manual folding soft top and 320 PS, followed by the 348 GTB and GTS with the same engine. Only 440 GTBs and GTSs were built before production ended in May 1994. The F355 succeeded the 348 that year.

What to check when buying a Ferrari 348

  • Check which version it is: the 348 tb and ts (1989–1993) have 300 PS; the Spider, GTB and GTS from 1993 have 320 PS.
  • The cam belts can only be replaced with the engine out of the car. Ask when that was last done, and for the invoice.
  • On a Spider, check the soft top and its frame.
  • Ask for the complete service history.
