About the Porsche 996

The 996 (1997–2005) was the first water-cooled Porsche 911 and a complete redesign. It shared its front end, with the so-called fried-egg headlights, with the Boxster. The Carrera started with a 3.4-litre flat-six with 300 PS; the facelift of 2001 brought a 3.6-litre engine with 320 PS and the headlights of the Turbo.

The range includes the Carrera and Carrera 4, the wide-bodied Carrera 4S, the Targa with a glass roof, and the Cabriolet. The GT3, GT3 RS, Turbo, Turbo S and GT2 use a racing-derived engine and are the most sought-after versions. The 996 is still the most affordable way into a 911, while the GT and Turbo models have risen strongly in value. The 997 replaced it in 2004.

What to check when buying a Porsche 996

  • On a Carrera, Carrera 4, 4S or Targa, ask about the intermediate-shaft (IMS) bearing: failure can destroy the engine, and many owners have fitted an upgraded bearing.
  • Check for oil leaks at the rear main seal and ask for a borescope inspection of the cylinders.
  • The GT3, GT3 RS, Turbo and GT2 use a different, racing-derived engine without the IMS issue.
  • Check the front radiators and air-conditioning condensers for corrosion, and ask for a full service history.

How do Porsche 996 prices vary by year?

Of the years with at least 3 cars for sale, 1998 cars have the lowest median asking price, €33,000 (98 cars), and 2006 cars the highest, €87,500 (6 cars). The year is the year of first registration; the version, mileage and condition matter as well.

Half of the Porsche 996 cars for sale have covered less than 113,100 km (about 70,300 miles). The middle half of the market has between 75,000 km and 153,100 km on the clock.

How long does it take to sell a Porsche 996?

1,069 cars sold in the last 90 days. Those listed on AutoScout24 had been online for a median of 67 days; AutoScout24 is the only portal that shows when a listing went online. What is the IMS bearing problem on the Porsche 996?

The intermediate-shaft bearing in the engine of the Carrera, Carrera 4, 4S and Targa can fail, which often destroys the engine. An upgraded bearing, fitted as a preventive measure, removes most of the risk. The GT3, Turbo and GT2 engines do not have this problem.

What is the difference between the 996.1 and the 996.2?

The 996.1 (1997–2001) has a 3.4-litre engine with 300 PS and the original headlights. The 996.2 (2001–2005) has a 3.6-litre engine with 320 PS, the headlights of the Turbo and a stiffer body.
