About the Ferrari California

The California (2008–2014) was Ferrari's first front-engined V8 road car and its first with a folding hard top. It was also the first Ferrari with direct injection and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It seats two adults, with two small rear seats behind them.

The 4.3-litre naturally aspirated V8 produced 460 PS, and 490 PS from 2012, when the car also lost 30 kg. In 2014 the California T switched to a 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 with 560 PS. The Portofino replaced it in 2017.

What to check when buying a Ferrari California

  • Operate the folding hard top several times and check the seals, the boot and the headlining for water ingress.
  • Check the year: the 490 PS cars from 2012 and the turbocharged California T (2014) are worth more than the early 460 PS cars.
  • Sticky interior switches and trim are common as the soft-touch coating ages; budget for refurbishment.
  • Ask for the Ferrari service history and confirm that recalls and software updates for the gearbox have been done.
