About the Lamborghini Diablo

The Diablo (1990–2001) replaced the Countach and was the first production Lamborghini with a top speed above 200 mph (325 km/h). Marcello Gandini's original design was smoothed out by Chrysler, which owned Lamborghini from 1987. Every Diablo has scissor doors, a V12 mounted lengthwise behind the seats and a five-speed manual gearbox; 2,903 were built.

The first cars have a 5.7-litre V12 with 492 PS and rear-wheel drive. In 1993 came the four-wheel-drive VT and the lightweight SE30 (150 cars, 525 PS); in 1995 the rear-wheel-drive SV (510 PS) and the VT Roadster, with a removable carbon-fibre roof. The 1999 facelift brought fixed headlights, a new dashboard, ABS and 530 PS. After Audi bought Lamborghini in 1998, the last versions got a 6.0-litre engine: the GT (80 cars, 575 PS) and the VT 6.0 (550 PS). The Murciélago replaced the Diablo in 2001.

What to check when buying a Lamborghini Diablo

  • Know the version: the early 492 PS car, the VT with four-wheel drive, the SV, the SE30, the Roadster and the 6.0-litre cars of 1999–2001 differ a lot in value.
  • Some cars have been converted to look like rarer versions, such as the GT. Check the chassis number and the history against the version the seller claims.
  • Power steering arrived in 1993, and ABS and fixed headlights with the 1999 facelift. Earlier cars are heavier to steer and have pop-up headlights.
  • Lamborghini's heritage department, Polo Storico, looks after every Diablo and can certify a car's originality. A certificate and a full service history with a Lamborghini specialist add a lot of confidence.
