About the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren

The SLR McLaren (2003–2010) was built by McLaren for Mercedes-Benz, at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, England. It has a carbon-fibre body and chassis, butterfly doors and an active rear wing that also works as an air brake. The front-mid-mounted, supercharged 5.4-litre V8 (M155) has 626 PS and 780 Nm, with a five-speed automatic gearbox; the top speed is 333 km/h.

The 722 Edition (2006, 150 cars) has 650 PS, a 10 mm lower ride height and a top speed of 337 km/h. Its name refers to start number 722 of Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson, who won the 1955 Mille Miglia in a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR. The Roadster followed in September 2007, with a roof that folds away electrically in ten seconds, and in 2009 the Roadster 722 S, also limited to 150 cars.

The last road version was the SLR Stirling Moss (2009), a speedster without roof or windscreen: all 75 went to existing SLR owners. McLaren also built 12 of the 722 GT race car (680 PS). In total 2,157 SLRs were made. Its successor at Mercedes was the SLS AMG.

What to check when buying a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren

  • Know the version: the coupé, the Roadster, the 722 Edition, the Roadster 722 S and the Stirling Moss differ a lot in rarity and value.
  • Ask for a full service history at a Mercedes-Benz dealer.
  • On a Roadster, operate the roof several times and check the seals.
  • The 722 GT is a race car and not road legal.
