About the Ferrari Mondial

The Mondial is Ferrari's mid-engined 2+2. It replaced the Dino GT4 at the 1980 Geneva motor show; Pininfarina designed it and Scaglietti built the bodies. The Mondial 8 had the 2.9-litre V8 of the 308, with 214 PS. The Quattrovalvole followed in 1982, with four valves per cylinder and 240 PS, and in 1983 the Cabriolet: the only mid-engined four-seat convertible ever built in series.

The Mondial 3.2 (1985) has 270 PS. The Mondial t (1989) has a 3.4-litre V8 with 300 PS, mounted lengthways with the gearbox across the car, as in the 348: together they form a "t". Ferrari built 703 Mondial 8s, 1,145 Quattrovalvole coupés and 629 Cabriolets, 987 3.2 coupés and 810 Cabriolets, and 858 Mondial t coupés and 1,017 Cabriolets. As a four-seater, the front-engined 456 succeeded it.

What to check when buying a Ferrari Mondial

  • Check which version it is: Mondial 8 (1980–1982, 214 PS), Quattrovalvole (from 1982, 240 PS), 3.2 (from 1985, 270 PS) or Mondial t (from 1989, 300 PS). Many listings only say "Mondial".
  • On the Mondial 8, Quattrovalvole and 3.2, the cam belts and the clutch can be replaced with the engine in the car. On the Mondial t, the engine and gearbox sit on a subframe that has to come out from below to replace the cam belts. Either way, ask when the belts were last replaced, and for the invoice.
  • On a Cabriolet, check the soft top and its frame.
  • Ask for the complete service history.
