About the Ferrari Dino GT4

The Dino 308 GT4 (1973–1980) was the first production Ferrari with a V8 mid-mounted behind the cabin, the layout of most Ferraris since. It is a 2+2 designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone, the first Ferrari road car since 1953 not styled by Pininfarina. The transverse 2.9-litre V8 had 255 PS in European form; US cars had less. The two-seat 308 GTB followed in 1975 with the same V8.

The 2.0-litre 208 GT4 (1975–1980, 170 PS) was made for Italy, where cars with engines above two litres paid more than double the VAT. The cars were sold as Dinos at first; from May 1976 they carried Ferrari badges. Ferrari built 2,826 of the 308 GT4 and 840 of the 208 GT4. The successor was the Mondial 8 (1980).

What to check when buying a Ferrari Dino GT4

  • Listings call it a Dino 308 GT4 or a Ferrari 308 GT4: it is the same car, with different badges before and after May 1976.
  • Check for rust, especially in the sills, the floor and the bottom of the doors.
  • Ask when the timing belts were last replaced, and for the service history.
  • Ask whether the car has Ferrari Classiche certification, which confirms that the main parts are original.
