About the Ferrari Testarossa

The Testarossa (1984–1991) is the wedge-shaped, flat-12 Ferrari of the 1980s, named after the red-painted cam covers of its engine. Its 4.9-litre twelve-cylinder engine sits behind the cabin and produces 390 PS. The side strakes feed air to the radiators, which moved from the nose to the sides of the car.

It replaced the 512 BB. Early cars, built until about 1986, have a single high-mounted door mirror and are known as "monospecchio"; they are the most sought after. The Testarossa was followed by the 512 TR in 1991 and the F512 M in 1994.

What to check when buying a Ferrari Testarossa

  • The cam belts need regular replacement, and on the Testarossa the engine has to come out to do it properly; ask when the last engine-out service was done.
  • Check that the cooling system works well: the side-mounted radiators need clean fins and working fans.
  • Look for rust in the lower body and around the doors, and for accident repairs to the long side panels.
  • Ferrari Classiche certification and a complete service history make a big difference to value.
