About the Ferrari 512

The Berlinetta Boxer was Ferrari's first mid-engined road car with a twelve-cylinder engine. The prototype of the 365 GT4 BB was shown at the 1971 Turin Motor Show, and the car went on sale in 1973 as the successor to the front-engined Daytona. Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina designed it. The 4.4-litre flat-12 sits behind the cabin, with the gearbox underneath it. Ferrari built 387.

The 512 BB followed at the 1976 Paris Motor Show, with a 4.9-litre engine and 360 PS; 512 stands for 5 litres and 12 cylinders. It has dry-sump lubrication, a chin spoiler, NACA ducts in the sides and two instead of three rear lights on each side; 929 were built. The 512 BBi of 1981 has Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and 340 PS. Ferrari built 1,007 until the Testarossa replaced it in 1984.

What to check when buying a Ferrari 512

  • Check which Boxer it is: the 365 GT4 BB (1973–1976, 4.4 litres), the 512 BB (1976–1981, 4.9 litres, carburettors) or the fuel-injected 512 BBi (1981–1984).
  • The four camshafts are driven by toothed belts: ask when they were last replaced, and for the complete service history.
  • Ferrari never sold the Boxer officially in the United States; cars that went there were modified to meet US rules. Ask about the car's history.
  • Ask whether the car has Ferrari Classiche certification, which confirms that the main parts are original.
