About the Ferrari F40

The F40 was built from 1987 to 1992 to mark Ferrari's 40th anniversary, and was the last new Ferrari launched while Enzo Ferrari was alive. Its 2.9-litre twin-turbo V8 produces 478 PS; with a claimed top speed of 324 km/h it was the first production road car rated at over 200 mph.

The body is made of composite panels, including Kevlar and carbon fibre, over a tubular steel frame, and there are no driver aids: no ABS, no power steering and no brake servo. Around 1,300 were built, every one painted red at the factory.

What to check when buying a Ferrari F40

  • Ferrari Classiche certification confirms that the chassis, engine and gearbox are original; certified cars are easier to sell.
  • The rubber fuel bladders have a limited life and should be replaced about every ten years; ask when it was last done.
  • Early cars have no catalytic converters and fixed suspension; later cars got catalytic converters and, on many, adjustable ride height. Collectors care which is which.
  • Check for accident repairs to the composite panels. Original paint and a complete history are worth a lot of money on an F40.
