About the Ferrari 296

The Ferrari 296 is a family of mid-engined plug-in hybrids: the 296 GTB berlinetta, the open 296 GTS, and the more powerful 296 Speciale and 296 Speciale A. The name combines the displacement (2,992 cc) with the number of cylinders, as on the original Dino. Every version has a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 with a 120° angle between the cylinder banks, an electric motor, an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox and rear-wheel drive.

The GTB was unveiled in June 2021 and built from 2022; the GTS followed in April 2022, with a folding hard top that opens or closes in 14 seconds at up to 45 km/h. Both have 830 PS in total (663 PS from the V6 and 167 PS from the electric motor) and the same performance, and both could be ordered with the track-oriented Assetto Fiorano package. The GTS weighs 70 kg more.

The 296 Speciale (coupé) and 296 Speciale A (spider) were presented in April 2025. The V6 has 700 PS and the combined output is 880 PS, 50 PS more than the GTB and GTS; the Speciale is 60 kg lighter than the GTB, the Speciale A 50 kg lighter than the GTS. Ferrari limits production of the Speciale by time rather than by number. The 296 Challenge and 296 GT3 race cars sometimes appear in listings too.

What to check when buying a Ferrari 296

  • Check which version it is: GTB (coupé), GTS (folding hard top), Speciale or Speciale A. Not every listing says so in the title.
  • Some listings give 663 PS: that is the V6 on its own. The GTB and GTS have 830 PS in total, the Speciale and Speciale A 880 PS.
  • On a GTB or GTS, check whether the car has the Assetto Fiorano package; it changes the character of the car and its value.
  • Ferrari's seven-year Genuine Maintenance programme passes to the next owner; check how much of it is left, and ask about the condition of the high-voltage battery.
  • The 296 Challenge and 296 GT3 are race cars and not road legal.
