About the Porsche 918

The 918 Spyder (2013–2015) is Porsche's plug-in hybrid hypercar and the successor to the Carrera GT. Exactly 918 were built: developed in Weissach and assembled in Zuffenhausen between September 2013 and June 2015. It has a carbon-fibre monocoque, a removable targa roof, four-wheel drive and a seven-speed PDK gearbox.

A naturally aspirated 4.6-litre V8, based on the engine of the RS Spyder race car, makes 608 PS and revs to 9,200 rpm. Two electric motors, one on each axle, add 210 kW, for a combined 887 PS and 1,280 Nm. Porsche quoted 0–100 km/h in 2.6 seconds and 345 km/h. In September 2013 a 918 with the Weissach Package became the first street-legal production car to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife in under seven minutes, in 6:57.

What to check when buying a Porsche 918

  • Check that all recalls have been carried out. The 918 has had around half a dozen, including for the front and rear control arms and the seat belts.
  • Check whether the car has the Weissach Package: magnesium BBS wheels, more carbon-fibre parts and Alcantara instead of leather. It was an expensive factory option.
  • Ask for a full service history at a Porsche Centre, including a check of the high-voltage battery.
  • Many cars have covered very few miles. A car that has stood still for a long time may need new tyres and fluids, whatever the mileage.
