About the Porsche 997

The 997 (2004–2012) brought back round headlights after the 996 and is often seen as a high point for the 911. The first series (997.1, until 2008) has 3.6- and 3.8-litre engines with 325 and 355 PS. The second series (997.2, from 2008) switched to direct injection, with 345 and 385 PS, and replaced the Tiptronic automatic with the PDK dual-clutch gearbox.

Beyond the Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera 4 and Targa, the range includes the Carrera GTS, the Turbo and Turbo S, and the GT3, GT3 RS, GT2 and GT2 RS. The GT3 RS 4.0 and GT2 RS are among the most valuable modern 911s. The 991 replaced the 997 in 2011.

What to check when buying a Porsche 997

  • On a 997.1 Carrera or Carrera S, ask for a borescope inspection of the cylinders: bore scoring is a known issue, especially on the 3.8-litre engine.
  • The 997.2 engines (2008 onwards) are considered more robust; the Turbo, GT2 and GT3 use a different engine design that avoids these problems.
  • Manual cars are generally valued higher than Tiptronic cars; PDK is sought after on 997.2 models.
  • A Porsche Approved warranty and a full service history add a lot of confidence on any 997.
