About the Porsche 992

The 992 is the eighth generation of the 911. It was unveiled in Los Angeles in November 2018 and went on sale in 2019. It is 45 mm wider than the 991, uses aluminium body panels and has the wide rear arches on every version. The Carrera, Carrera S and Carrera GTS (from 2021) use a 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat-six with 385, 450 and 480 PS. The Turbo and Turbo S (from 2020) have a 3.7-litre engine with 580 and 650 PS.

The GT3 (2021) and GT3 RS (2022) keep a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre engine with 510 and 525 PS. Limited editions include the Sport Classic (1,250 cars, with a manual gearbox), the off-road Dakar (2,500 cars) and the lightweight S/T (1,963 cars).

The facelifted 992.2 arrived in 2024. The Carrera now has 394 PS and the Carrera S (from 2025) 480 PS. The Carrera GTS became the first series-production hybrid 911: its T-Hybrid system with a 3.6-litre engine makes 541 PS. The Turbo S followed in 2025 with a T-Hybrid of 711 PS.

What to check when buying a Porsche 992

  • Check whether a car is a 992.1 (2019–2024) or a 992.2 (from 2024): the 992.2 has more power, and its GTS and Turbo S use the T-Hybrid system.
  • Options make a big difference to value on a 992, so compare the specification and not just the price, for example the Sport Chrono package.
  • A manual gearbox was only offered on some versions, such as the GTS, the Carrera T and the GT3, and it is standard on the Sport Classic and the S/T. The 992.2 was launched with the PDK gearbox only; the manual returned on the Carrera T and GT3 in late 2024.
  • On a GT3 or GT3 RS, ask about track use and check the tyres, brakes and service history.
  • A Porsche Approved warranty and a full service history at a Porsche Centre add a lot of confidence.
