About the Lamborghini Murciélago
The Murciélago (2001–2010) replaced the Diablo and was the first new Lamborghini developed under Audi ownership. Designed by Luc Donckerwolke, it has scissor doors, a steel frame with mostly carbon-fibre body panels, a V12 mounted lengthwise behind the seats and four-wheel drive with a viscous centre coupling. The gearbox is a six-speed manual or the six-speed e-gear automated manual.
The first cars have a 6.2-litre V12 with 580 PS; the Roadster, with a soft top that is fitted by hand, followed in 2004. In 2006 the LP 640 brought a 6.5-litre engine with 640 PS and a facelift, and the LP 640 Roadster was shown at the end of that year. The last versions were the 670 PS LP 670-4 SuperVeloce (2009–2010), about 100 kg lighter, and the LP 650-4 Roadster, limited to 50 cars. In total 4,099 Murciélagos were built; the Aventador took over in 2011.
What to check when buying a Lamborghini Murciélago
- Know the version: the 580 PS original with the 6.2-litre engine, the 640 PS LP 640 with the 6.5-litre engine and the 670 PS SV differ a lot in value, as do the coupé and the Roadster.
- Clutch wear is a big running cost on manual and e-gear cars alike: ask when the clutch was last replaced, and on an e-gear car ask for a clutch-wear reading.
- On a 2007–2008 car, check that the recall for the fuel pump support inside the tank has been carried out. Lamborghini recalled these cars in the United States in 2010 because of a possible fuel leak.
- On a Roadster, check that the soft top is complete and in good condition. With the roof fitted, the car is only meant to be driven up to 160 km/h.
- Carbon-ceramic brakes were an option on the LP 640 and standard on the SV; they are expensive to replace, so check the discs. A full Lamborghini service history is essential.
