The 550 Maranello (1996–2002) replaced the mid-engined F512 M and put Ferrari's two-seat V12 back in the front, as on the 365 GTB/4 Daytona. Pininfarina designed it. The naturally aspirated 5.5-litre V12 (F133) has 485 PS and 568 Nm and drives the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. Ferrari quoted 0–100 km/h in 4.4 seconds and 320 km/h, and built 3,083 of them.
For Pininfarina's 70th anniversary Ferrari presented the 550 Barchetta Pininfarina at the 2000 Paris Motor Show: an open two-seater with a soft top meant only as temporary protection against rain. Ferrari built 448. The coupé was succeeded in 2002 by the 575M Maranello.
