About the Ferrari 458

The 458 (2009–2015) is the last mid-engined V8 Ferrari without turbochargers. Its 4.5-litre V8 revs to 9,000 rpm and produces 570 PS, sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

The 458 Italia coupé was joined in 2011 by the 458 Spider, the first mid-engined Ferrari with a folding hard top. The lighter 605 PS 458 Speciale (2013) and the open Speciale A, limited to 499 cars, are the most collectable versions. The successor, the Ferrari 488, switched to a twin-turbo V8 in 2015.

What to check when buying a Ferrari 458

  • Sticky interior switches and trim are common as the soft-touch coating ages; check them and budget for refurbishment.
  • Carbon-ceramic brakes are standard; check the discs, because replacements are costly.
  • On a Spider, operate the folding roof several times and check for leaks.
  • Ask for the Ferrari service history and confirm that all recalls have been carried out; a Ferrari Approved car or a Ferrari Power extended warranty adds peace of mind.
