About the Ferrari 400

The Ferrari 400 (1976–1985) is a front-engined 2+2 grand tourer with a V12, designed by Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina and presented at the 1976 Paris Motor Show as the successor to the 365 GT4 2+2. The 4.8-litre V12 with carburettors had 340 PS. The 400 Automatic was the first Ferrari with an automatic gearbox, a three-speed from General Motors; the 400 GT had a manual gearbox.

From 1979 the 400i had fuel injection, first with 310 PS and from 1982 with 315 PS. Ferrari built 502 of the 400 (355 of them automatics) and 1,305 of the 400i (883 automatics). The 412 followed in 1985.

What to check when buying a Ferrari 400

  • Check the gearbox: most cars are automatics; manuals are rarer (147 of the 502 carburettor cars and 422 of the 1,305 400i's).
  • Check for rust, especially in the sills, the floor and the bottom of the doors.
  • Ask whether the car has Ferrari Classiche certification, which confirms that the main parts are original.
