About the Porsche 993

The 993 (1993–1998) is the last air-cooled Porsche 911, and for many enthusiasts the best-looking one. Compared with the 964 it got a smoother body, a new multi-link rear axle and a six-speed manual gearbox. The 3.6-litre flat-six produced 272 PS, and 285 PS from 1995 with the Varioram variable intake.

The line-up included the rear-wheel-drive Carrera and the four-wheel-drive Carrera 4 as coupé and Cabriolet, the Targa with a sliding glass roof, and the wide-bodied Carrera 4S and Carrera S. The Turbo was the first 911 Turbo with twin turbochargers and all-wheel drive. The lightweight Carrera RS and the GT2 are the most collectable. The water-cooled 996 took over in 1997.

What to check when buying a Porsche 993

  • Ask about the secondary air injection system: blocked ports are a common fault on the 993 and can be costly to clear.
  • Check for oil leaks and ask for a leak-down or compression test; a full history with a Porsche specialist adds value.
  • Manual cars are worth more than Tiptronic cars, and the wide-bodied Carrera S and 4S carry a premium over the narrow-body Carrera.
  • For an RS, Turbo S or GT2, ask for a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity: replicas and conversions exist.

Why is the Porsche 993 so sought after?

It is the last air-cooled 911, combining the classic engine and sound with a more modern chassis, a six-speed gearbox and a smoother body. Production ended in 1998, so the supply is fixed.

What is the difference between the 993 Carrera, Carrera S and Carrera 4S?

The Carrera has the narrow body. The Carrera 4S (from 1995) has the wide Turbo body, all-wheel drive and Turbo brakes; the Carrera S (from 1997) has the wide body with rear-wheel drive. All three use the 285 PS 3.6-litre engine in later years.
