The year is the year of first registration; years with fewer than 3 cars for sale are left out. A car counts as sold when its listing disappears after at least 3 days online and does not come back at the same seller within a month; its last asking price is not necessarily what it sold for. Days to sell come from AutoScout24 and PistonHeads, the portals that show when a listing went online.

About the Porsche 964

The 964 (1989–1994) looks like a classic 911 but was largely new underneath: coil springs instead of torsion bars, power steering, ABS and, in the Carrera 4, the first four-wheel drive in a regular 911. The air-cooled 3.6-litre flat-six produces 250 PS. The Carrera 2 and Carrera 4 were offered as coupé, Targa and Cabriolet, and the Tiptronic automatic arrived in 1990.

The lightweight Carrera RS (260 PS) and the Turbo, first with a 3.3-litre and later with a 3.6-litre engine, are the most valuable versions, followed by special editions such as the Speedster. The 964 followed the Carrera 3.2 and the 930 Turbo, and was replaced by the 993.

What to check when buying a Porsche 964

  • Oil leaks are common, notably from the cylinder heads and base gaskets; budget for a top-end or engine rebuild if the history is thin.
  • Ask about the dual-mass flywheel and the belt that drives the second ignition distributor; both are known weak points.
  • Check for rust in the usual places: sills, floor, front suspension mounts and around the windscreen.
  • For a Carrera RS or Turbo, ask for a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity: conversions and replicas are common.
