About the McLaren 650S

The 650S (2014–2017) is based on the 12C, with about a quarter of its parts new. McLaren first planned to sell it alongside the 12C, but made it the 12C's replacement when 12C sales fell. It was unveiled at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show as a coupé and as a Spider with a retractable hard top.

The mid-mounted 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 makes 650 PS and 678 Nm, through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. McLaren quoted 0–100 km/h in 3.0 seconds and a top speed of 333 km/h for the coupé (328 km/h for the Spider). Limited editions include the 650S Le Mans (50 coupés, marking McLaren's 1995 Le Mans win) and the 650S Can-Am (50 Spiders); the lighter 675LT is a separate model. The 720S replaced the 650S in 2017.

What to check when buying a McLaren 650S

  • Have a McLaren specialist check the hydraulic suspension: the accumulators lose pressure over time and need replacing, which shows up as a suspension fault warning.
  • Check the coolant hoses and clamps, a known weak point on McLarens of this generation.
  • Carbon-ceramic brakes are standard and wear quickly with track use; check the discs.
  • Test the IRIS infotainment system, which is prone to faults, and after rain listen for water sloshing inside the doors.
  • Ask for a full McLaren service history: a service every year or every 10,000 miles.
