About the Ferrari 208

The 208 is the two-litre version of Ferrari's mid-engined V8 coupé and targa, built mainly for Italy, where cars with an engine over two litres paid 38% VAT instead of 18%. The 208 GTB and GTS of 1980–1981 share the body of the 308, but their 2.0-litre V8 with four Weber carburettors produces only 155 hp. Ferrari built 140 GTB coupés and 160 GTS targas.

The 208 GTB Turbo followed at the 1982 Turin Motor Show and the GTS Turbo in 1983, with a KKK turbocharger and Bosch K-Jetronic injection for 220 hp; 437 GTB Turbos and 250 GTS Turbos were built until 1985. From 1986 to 1989 the GTB Turbo and GTS Turbo used the body of the 328, with an IHI turbo and an intercooler on top of the engine, for 254 PS. NACA ducts in front of the rear wheels, five vents in the rear bumper and a black roof spoiler set them apart; Ferrari built 308 GTB Turbos and 828 GTS Turbos. The 2+2 Dino 208 GT4 of 1975–1980 is listed under the Dino GT4.

What to check when buying a Ferrari 208

  • Know which 208 you are looking at: the 1980–1981 car with carburettors (155 hp), the 208 Turbo of 1982–1985 (220 hp, 308 body) or the GTB/GTS Turbo of 1986–1989 with intercooler (254 PS, 328 body). Listings often just say "208 Turbo" or "Turbo GTS"; the year and the output tell them apart.
  • Most 208s were sold new in Italy. Many are offered there with ASI certification (the Italian historic register); ask for it, and for Ferrari Classiche certification if the seller mentions it.
  • As on the 308 and 328, ask when the cam belts were last replaced. On a turbo, have the turbocharger, its oil lines and the boost pressure checked.
  • GTS cars have a removable roof panel; check the seals and the panel itself for damage.
