About the Aston Martin DB

The DB4, DB5 and DB6 are the classic Aston Martins named after Sir David Brown, who took over the company in 1947. The DB4 of 1958 was the first Aston Martin built at Newport Pagnell. Carrozzeria Touring in Milan designed its Superleggera body, with light-alloy panels over a frame of small tubes, and Tadek Marek designed its twin-cam straight six of 3.7 litres. Aston Martin built 1,110 DB4s until 1963, plus 75 DB4 GTs and 19 DB4 GT Zagatos.

The DB5 (1963–1965) has a 4.0-litre engine and a five-speed ZF gearbox; 1,059 were built, 123 of them convertibles. It became the most famous Aston Martin as James Bond's car in Goldfinger (1964), and from 2020 Aston Martin built 25 new Goldfinger continuation cars at Newport Pagnell. The DB6 of 1965 has a 95 mm longer wheelbase for more room in the back and a Kamm tail with a lip spoiler; 1,788 were built. Its successor was the DBS of 1967; the numbered series continued in 1993 with the DB7.

What to check when buying an Aston Martin DB

  • Check which car it is: the DB4 (1958–1963, 3.7 litres), the DB5 (1963–1965, 4.0 litres) or the DB6 (1965–1970, 4.0 litres, longer, with a Kamm tail).
  • Vantage engines have more power (on the DB5 with three Weber carburettors). Ask for proof that a car left the factory as a Vantage: engines are often upgraded later.
  • Look for corrosion where the alloy body panels meet the steel frame, and ask for the restoration history.
  • Convertibles and DB4 GT-style cars are sometimes conversions; check the chassis number against the factory build records.
