About the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

The SLS AMG (2010–2015) was the first car developed entirely by Mercedes-AMG. Mark Fetherston designed it as a modern revival of the 300 SL Gullwing, with gullwing doors that open upwards on gas struts. It has an aluminium spaceframe, a front-mid-mounted, naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 (M159) and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox at the rear axle.

The coupé has 571 PS; Mercedes quoted 0–100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and 315 km/h. The Roadster followed in 2011, the 591 PS SLS AMG GT in 2012 and the 631 PS Black Series in 2013; the Final Edition closed the run. The all-electric SLS AMG Electric Drive (2013) had four electric motors and 751 PS. The less expensive and less powerful AMG GT followed in 2014.

What to check when buying a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

  • Know the version: the coupé, the Roadster, the GT, the Black Series and the Final Edition differ a lot in value.
  • Check that the gullwing doors stay up on their own. The gas struts wear out after a number of years and need replacing.
  • Ask for a full Mercedes-AMG service history, including the dual-clutch gearbox.
  • On a Roadster, operate the fabric roof several times and check the seals for leaks.
