About the Ferrari F355

The F355 (1994–1999) replaced the 348 and was designed at Pininfarina by Maurizio Corbi. The Berlinetta arrived in May 1994; the GTS, with a removable targa roof, and the Spider followed in 1995. Ferrari built 11,273 F355s before the 360 Modena took over in 1999.

Its 3.5-litre V8 has five valves per cylinder and makes 380 PS at 8,250 rpm. A six-speed manual was standard; from 1997 Ferrari also offered the F1 paddle-shift gearbox, the first time it appeared in a Ferrari road car. The Serie Fiorano of 1999 was a limited run of about 100 Spiders.

What to check when buying a Ferrari F355

  • The timing belts are changed with the engine removed: every three years or 30,000 miles, according to the factory schedule. Ask for proof of a recent engine-out belt service; a neglected belt can destroy the engine.
  • On a cold start, listen for rattles from the exhaust manifolds and the catalytic converters.
  • Know the version: the Berlinetta, GTS and Spider, with the manual or the F1 gearbox, differ in value. About three in four F355s have the manual.
  • In 2009 Ferrari recalled about 2,400 cars from 1995–1999 because of badly positioned fuel-line clamps; check that the recall work has been done.
