About the Aston Martin DB9

The DB9 (2004–2016) replaced the DB7 and was the first car built at Aston Martin's Gaydon factory. It sits on the bonded-aluminium VH platform and uses a naturally aspirated 5.9-litre V12 at the front, driving the rear wheels through a transaxle. Most cars have the six-speed Touchtronic automatic; a six-speed manual was offered early on and is rare. The Volante is the soft-top version.

Power rose over the years: 456 PS at launch, 477 PS from 2008, 517 PS after the 2012 facelift and 547 PS in the final DB9 GT (2015–2016). The DBS of 2007 is a harder, carbon-panelled car on the same platform. The DB9's successor is the DB11.

What to check when buying an Aston Martin DB9

  • Check the year and power level: an early 456 PS car, a 477 PS car from 2008, the 517 PS facelift and the 547 PS DB9 GT are priced very differently.
  • Look underneath for corrosion on the subframes and suspension parts, and listen for worn suspension bushes over bumps.
  • Ask for a full service history with Aston Martin or a known specialist, including gearbox fluid changes on Touchtronic cars.
  • On a Volante, operate the roof several times and check the seals and the headlining for water marks.
